The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Thursday picked Axiom Space to develop a moonwalking system for the Artemis III mission. The contract is reportedly worth USD 228.5 million. The company has been selected to develop the next-generation Artemis spacesuit.

Axiom Space will also develop supporting systems. It will demonstrate the use of the equipment on the Artemis-III lunar mission. The Houston- based company will be responsible for the design, development, qualification, certification, and production of its spacesuits and support equipment, reported IANS.

“NASA is proud to partner with commercial industry on this historic mission that will kickstart the United States building a lasting presence on the surface of the Moon,” said Lara Kearney, manager of NASA’s Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility programme, as quoted by the news agency.

The company will test the suits in a spacelike environment before the mission. Notably, Artemis-III is a US space mission, which will land humans on the lunar surface for the first time since the Apollo mission in 1972. Under the Artemis mission, the US space agency will land the first woman and the first person of colour on the Moon.

Notably, NASA attempted twice to launch its giant Moon rocket Artemis I. However, both attempts were unsuccessful. As per NASA, the next possible launch can take place from September 19 to October 4 and October 17 to 31. Artemis 1 is a planned uncrewed test flight for NASA’s Artemis program. The rocket will propel the Orion crew capsule into orbit around the Moon.
